The Difference Between Accepting The Tale (Narration/Report/News) From The Trustworthy (Thiqah) & Accepting The Unexplained Criticism (Jarh Mubham) – Shaykh Abdul-Azeez Ar-Rayyes

A dangerous matter occurred these times, and that is some people want to dress the blind following in a new dress which he claims it is a Salafi dress!

How is that?

They want, my brothers, to call to blind following in the name of Salafiyyah, and in the name of accepting the tale from the trustworthy.

He says, for example, that Shaykh criticised that person, you must accept his criticism.

You say to him: what is the proof on that? [i.e. that I must accept his criticism]

He says: Allaah the exalted said: {O you who believe, if an evil person comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done}, Al-Hujuraat verse 6, the derived understanding by means of the opposite is (if the trustworthy comes to you with news, accept it). Is not this Shaykh a trustworthy to you?

You say: yes, he is.

He says: then you must accept his criticism.

You say to him: there is a difference between the criticism from the trustworthy and the tale from the trustworthy. The trustworthy may say to you: the brothers are gathering in that house, the origin is to accept the tale (news/report/narration) from the trustworthy.

But if he says to you: the brothers are misguided, is this a tale or Ijtihaad (personal striving and research into a specific issue by a scholar in oder to pass a ruling in this issue)? This is Ijtihaad; there is a difference between accepting the tale and accepting the Ijtihaad.

Therefore, it is impermissible to introduce a principle which Ahlus-Sunnah fight in the name of accepting the tale from the trustworthy, i.e. to revive blind following in the name of accepting the tale from the trustworthy, I hope this is clear.

So my brothers, there is a difference between accepting the tale from the trustworthy and the Ijtihaad of the trustworthy, the origin is to accept his tale as for his Ijtihaad it has its guidelines. If the criticism that is directed at a man whom is authenticated in his Salafiyyah is abstract, it is not accepted.

When is the criticism accepted? If it is detailed (jarh muffasr), he mentioned the proofs and evidence on it regarding a man whom has been authenticated (i.e. proven to be salafi), in such case we accept his criticism (jarh muffasr – detailed criticism) if his proofs are convincing and we cast as misguided whom was authenticated to be upon the Sunnah. And there is a detailing in this matter, however introducing blind following into Ahlus-Sunah in the name of a Salafi principle, where they make accepting the tale from the trustworthy a blind following of this person or that person is not permissible in the Sharee’ah of Muhammad bin Abdil-llaah- peace is upon him-.

And it is binding on this person; [to] reverse the matter, if any honorable and trustworthy Shaykh said that your Shaykh is misguided, it is obligatory upon you to accept his tale because this is part of accepting the tale from the trustworthy!

This would result in corruption which neither pleases Allaah nor His Messenger- peace is upon him, his household and his companions-.
