Shaykh Bin Baz said, “When he is being truthful [in his claim] that he is Salafi or Athari(1) then there is no harm in that, [this is] similar to what the Salaf used to say, ‘So and so is a Salafi’, ‘So and so is Athari’. This is a tazkiyah (commendation) which is necessary, a tazkiyah that is obligatory.”

1. A Salafi is the same as an Athari they are both individuals who follow the Quran and Sunnah upon the understanding of the salafus saalih (the righteous predecessors). The two terms can be used interchangeably for a person who adheres to the aqeedah and manhaj of the Salaf (which is the way of Ahlu Hadeeth, also known as Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah/Ahlus Sunnah).
