Shaykh Zayd Al-Madkhalee said, “‘Leaving Salafiyyah’: what is meant by ‘Salafiyyah’ is: What our Prophet Muhammad was upon, and his noble Companions, whom have preceded and past, from following the Book and the Sunnah.
And (what is meant by) ‘leaving’ (is): Either leaving (Salafiyyah) completely (Kulee) or leaving it (i.e. Salafiyyah) partially (juzi), (that is) not completely and this is according to (ones) actions.
So leaving Salafiyyah – which is the religion which the Salaf (the pious predecessors) were upon – completely, is by: major disbelief, major polytheism (shirk-ul-Akbar), hypocrisy in creed (nifaaq al-‘Aqadee), atheism (all of these) takes one out of the religion; the person does not remain in the circle of Islam, no matter what, so how can he remain in the circle of Salafiyyah (true, correct Islam).
Leaving (Salafiyah) by a heresy (innovation) that goes against the Salafi manhaj (methodology) whether it is in aqeedah (Islamic beliefs) or a heresy (innovation) in religious rites, manners, methodology in jihad and calling to Allah, ordering (with good) or prohibiting (evil) and (giving) advice, opposing the (Pious) Predecessors (Salaf us-Saalih), these takes one out of the circle of Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Salafiyyah).
They enter one into the circle of heresy (innovation), except if it is a heresy (innovation) which does not take him outside of Islam.
(That heresy) makes him not (from) among the Salafis, whom are upon the correct aqeedah and the correct manhaj.
He will not be considered from among them (the Salafis) if he commits a heresy (innovation), calls to it and he wars with others due to it: then he is not regarded as being from the Salafis but he does not leave the circle of Islam as long as he does not commit that which takes him out of the circle of Islam.
