Do Not Call A Person Salafi Simply Because He Refutes Some Of The Innovators Or Some Of The Misguided Sects, Make Sure He Has The Characteristics Of A Person Upon The Sunnah First – Shaykh Ahmad Baazmool (With A Footnote By Shaykh Muhammad Bin Ramzaan Al-Haajiree)

Shaykh Ahmad Baazmool said, “…What did al-Barbahaaree [author of the famous classical book on creed and manhaj ‘Sharhus Sunnah’] say [concerning when a person is decrished as being upon the sunmah]?

He said – may Allaah have mercy upon him, “And a person is not described with the Sunnah until the characteristics of the Sunnah unite in him.”(1)

So if you see a person for example engaging in the aspects of some refutations of the mukhaalifoon (those who oppose the Truth); thats it, this one is Salafi?! This is wrong! Until you look into the aspects of this and the aspects of that [i.e. until you look at whether this persons creed, manhaj, manners, social dealings with others and all acts of worship are all in line with the truth and the Sunnah (Salafiyyah)]…

His foundations are the Book, the Sunnah and the manhaj of as-Salaf as-Saalih (the righteous predecessors), he implements them and revolves around them and it is known that he is with the Salafiyyoon and his brothers from the people of Sunnah, etc; then this one is a Salafi!

As for other than that, then do not be fooled by his mere refutation of somemukhaalifoon that he is a Sunnee.

…[Moreover] we heard the words of some of the mashaayikh, may Allaah reward them with good. Some of the mashaayikh notified [me] that some of the mukhaalifoon may show himself with refutation of the innovators. Al-Ikhwaan [al-Muslimoon] show themselves with refuting the Soofiyyah and the Raafidah, and where are al-Ikhwaan now? In the midst of the Soofiyyah and the Raafidah! And there are many attitudes [that they have]: they go and enter with them, etc.

So do not be fooled until the characteristics of the Sunnah unite in him [any person you wish to describe as being upon the sunnah…” Ref: Questions & Answers regarding Manhaj by Shaykh Ahmad Baazmool

Footnote:

1) Shaykh Muhammad Bin Ramzaan Al-Haajiree said, [The characteristics of the person of the Sunnah are that,] his aqeedah (Islamic beliefs), his worship, his following [of the Prophet, salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam], his dawah (his call), his invitatio, his character, his mannerisms, his transactions, his dealings with the people [are all in line with the sunnah and the Salaf As-Saalih]. This is the person of the sunnah [a Salafi].

His aqeedah is correct, and it’s based upon following the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam).

His worship is like that of the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam).

His calling or invitation is likewise (upon the Sunnah of the Prophet, (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam)).

All of the affairs of his life are in accordance with the Sunnah. This is the person of the Sunnah.

In terms of where and what he eats, or where or what he drinks.

In terms of what he wears.

How he dresses, how he presents himself, and his outward appearance. In terms of travelling, how he stays [in his house and acts with his family and while alone at home], how his nights are, how his days are – in regards to everything. He pays attention to following the Sunnah in everything he does.

Plus whatever he may have from falling short, then he falls short in that area [due to a misinterpretation of the authentic texts, forgetfulness, an error or due to following his desires but never ever due to purposely and willing innovating something in the religion (i.e. doing bidah/bidahs)].” Ref: Explanation Of Imam al-Barbahaarees ‘Sharhus Sunnah’ By Shaykh Muhammad bin Ramzaan Al-Haajiree
