Shaykh Abdur Razzaq Al-Badr said, “…The small student of knowledge [and layman] going and siting with the major innovators [i.e. callers to innovations] and saying: ‘I will debate him’, or saying: ‘I will establish the proof against him’; he may not leave from him [that innovator] except that he is contaminated with doubts!
Sometimes some of the students will come to us [the scholars] while he is dilapidated and he is the one who has brought it upon himself; either by sitting with the leaders of falsehood [callers to innovations] or by entering websites and chat rooms [full of followers of misguided callers and astray sects], or reading the books [of innovators, which are] filled with doubts.
He put his religion at risk and then his heart remains filled with these hammering doubts [from these innovators].
Thus the point is; it is upon the student of knowledge [and the layman] to preserve his time with beneficial knowledge and righteous actions.
…[So the small students of knowkedge and laypeople shouldn’t involve themselves in debates with innovators.]
[However sometimes the scholars of the Salaf did debate innovators and the contemporary scholars do sometimes debate innovators. These] debates were/are held by scholars firmly grounded in knowledge, when and if they were/are tested with some of the innovators or those who had doubts with them.
They would/do contend against them with arguments, evidence, proofs and clarifications; which would establish the argument against these individuals, perchance they might return back from their falsehood.
As for the common people or the new student of knowledge, then his place is as we have mentioned [seeking knowledge and not debating innovators]. He should utilize his time for seeking knowledge step by step…” Ref: mtws.posthaven.com (slightly adapted for easier reading by ahlusunnahwaljamaah.com)
