Some Realities Of Salafiyyah – Shaykh Aasim Bin Abdillah Al-Qaryooti

Shaykh Aasim Bin Abdillah Al-Qaryooti said, “In these harsh times, the wading in with regards to Salafiyyah (i.e. the attacks on Salafiyyah), has been much and a number of accusations have been hurled against it, which has motivated me to clarify some realities [of Salafiyyah], so I say:

Firstly, it is upon us to know and comprehend that Salafiyyah is the true religion of al-Islaam. Built upon this is that calling to it is not something done only at a specific time – rather, it is obligatory to clarify the reality behind the true religion of al-Islaam and the lies and fabrications attributed to it, whether these are matters of belief, conduct, or other than these.

The true religion is that which the prophet sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and his noble companions were upon.

As for that which was introduced into it, it is not from al-Islaam, as Allaah completed His religion when he said {This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion} [al-Ma’idah: 3]

There lies importance in the need to refer to the Salaf’s understanding of the Book and Sunnah and that their way is obligatory to follow, due to the saying of the prophet sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, “The best of people are my generation, and then those who follow and then those who follow.”, agreed upon.

This goodness is general and includes [goodness in] belief, approach, conduct, understanding, worship and all good praiseworthy actions.

The methodology of the Salaf is a methodology that is obligatory to follow and seek guidance in at all times – it is not simply a blessed bygone era, as some imagine. It is more submissive; more knowledge-based and better judging than all other methodologies – contrary to the claims of those who say the methodology of the Salaf is more submissive and the methodology of the khalaf more knowledge-based and better judging.

For this reason, al-Haafith Ibn Hajr, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said, “The content one is whosoever adheres to that which the Salaf were upon and avoids that which the khalaf (followers of misguided individuals after the Salaf) introduced. And if they have to take from them [the Khalaf] they take to the extent of their need but their intent is that which was first [i.e. the mathhab of the Salaf] and Allaah is the One who Grants success.” Fat-hal-Baari (13/253).

The prophet sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam told of the Saved Sect when he said, “There will not cease to be a group from my ummah who establish Allaah’s order. Those who deceive them will not harm them, nor those who differ from them, until Allaah’s affair comes and they are upon that.’ Reported by al-Bukhaari. Similarly, he told of the ummah’s breaking into factions with his saying, ‘Indeed, Bani Israa’eel broke into 72 sects and my nation will split into 73, all of whom will be in the fire except one.’ They [the sahaabah] asked, “And what is that group, o messenger of Allaah?” He replied, “That which is upon what I and my companions are upon.” Reported by at-Tirmithi and others.

The Wise Legislator has not left us wondering about this but has guided us towards the exit from this splitting, where the prophet sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, ‘For indeed, those who live among you after me will see great differing – so upon you is my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly-guided caliphs. Adhere to it and grip it with your molars. And beware of the newly invented matters, for indeed every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is misguidance.’

Also the most distinguishing characteristic of Salafiyyah and its greatest trait is its calling to and diligence towards the correct Islaamic ‘aqeedah from the two sources of revelation – the Book and Sunnah as within them lie soundness for the Muslim in their religion – as it is fitting for them to meet their lord with a correct, pure ‘aqeedah. [The da’wah] is sweet with the tawheed of Allaah, far removed from shirk in all its forms – both those large and small – as Tawheed is Allaah’s right over the slaves and due to it He created the creation. It is the call of the prophets and messengers, the opposite of which is shirk [associating partners with Allaah], which is the ugliest of sins and most oppressive of oppressions, which destroys action.

Furthermore from the most distinguishing characteristics of Salafiyyah is its warning against going to extremes in negating Allaah’s names and attributes with the claim of negating similitudes between the Creator and the creation. Some hasten towards likening Allaah [to His creation] first and then go on to distort the attribute. If they followed the way of the Salaf in this matter, affirming that which is in the Book and Sunnah in a way that befits His majesty and greatness, without making similitudes; likening Him to His creation; distorting or falsely interpreting, they would not fall into that which they are trying to escape from.

One of the widespread manifestations of excessiveness in the Islaamic world is excessiveness with regards to the prophet sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, raising him over the station of prophethood and worship of Allaah, to the level of lordship…

There lies soundness in belief (aqeedah) for the individual if they know the Salafi manhaj and for the protection for the community against disarray, splitting into factions and groups and the distorted thinking that leads to making takfeer (labelling other Muslims as kuffar) without right; the killing of Muslims due to erroneous doubts; the bombing of property and killing of those who are under protection and other great evils that are built upon this.

The Salafi dawah is the only dawah that, due to its grounded nature, stands up against the deviant takfeeri ideology and that which results, from bombing, destroying, breaching of the peace and other than this from its evils effects…

So it is astounding that Ahlu Sunnah, those who call to the way of the Salaf have a number of accusations hurled against them.

This is the manner of the people of desires, as the Imaam Abu Haatim Muhammad bin Idrees al-Hanthali ar-Raazi stated, may Allaah have mercy upon him, “A sign of the people of innovation is their slandering of the people of the athar; a sign of the Jahmiyyah is that they call Ahlus Sunnah Mushabihah and Naabitah; a sign of the Qadariyyah is that they call Ahlus Sunnah Mujabirah and a sign of the heretics is that they call the people of the athat Hashawiyyah.”

As for the errors of some who ascribe to Salafiyyah, if their ascription is correct, it is not to be considered except as individuals’ errors.

The proof of this is that we see many forms of Shirk in Islaamic countries – Shirk that goes beyond that of the disbelievers of Quraysh – who, at times of difficulty, used to invoke Allaah alone.

So are these mistakes in understanding relating to ‘aqeedah, or manners or character, from individuals from the Muslims to be held against Islaam? Or are they to be held against those who commit them and Islaam is removed from them?

Salafiyyah is a whole, that is not divided according to time or place…

As for matters of ijtihaad, one scholar and another may differ, regardless of whether they are from one land or from different lands. This kind of differing, between the people of ijtihaad, is allowable and those involved are between one reward and two [rewards] due to the saying of the prophet sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, ‘If the judge makes a ruling, making ijtihaad, and is correct, they will have two rewards and if they make a ruling and err, they have one.’ And the reasons for differing are many – Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah has expounded upon them in his book Raf al-Malaam ‘an il-A’immatil A’laam.

In closing, I say:

Indeed the Salafi dawah is the dawah of truth, by consensus of the people of knowledge – Salafiyyah means to remain upon the pure religion, Islaam free of any impurities. This is what the prophet sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and his companions were upon.

Every religion that the prophet, sall Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and his noble companions were not upon is not religion – rather it is something that has been introduced into it, as Allaah completed His religion when he said, {This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion} [al-Ma’idah: 3]

So how much in need is the Islaamic Ummah, rulers and citizens, of the methodology of the Salaf – especially in our times, in which trials and tribulations are many?

We ask Allaah for deliverance and all praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all that exists.”
