Shaykh Ubayd Al-Jabiree said, “This [saying, “Whoever calls himself Salafi is giving himself a tazkiyah (ascribing purity to himself) so instead he should say, “I am upon the manhaj of the Salaf,”] is a form of playing with words. The followers of Al-Ikhwaan Al-Muslimoon openly claim Ikhwaaniyyah (they call themselves Ikhwaanees), the followers of Jamaah At-Tableegh openly claim Tableeghiyyah (they call themselves Tableeghees), and so forth.
So then why would a Salafi hide his Salafiyyah?
Plus as I have…mentioned Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah relayed that there exists an ijmah (scholarly consensus – that there is no blaming a person who adopts the madhab of the Salaf – the Salafi manhaj).”(*)
* Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said, “There is no blame on the one who openly manifests the madhab of the Salaf [i.e. the Salafi manhaj], ascribes himself to it and refers to it.
Rather, that must be accepted from him due to the consensus (of the scholars). For verily the madhab of the Salaf [i.e. the Salafi manhaj] is nothing but Truth…” Ref: Majmoo Al-Fataawaa 4:149
