Shaykh Al-Fawzaan said, “(Allah said: “The Masjid of Allah shall be maintained only by those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day; perform al-Salat and give Zakat.” [al-Tawbah 9:18]
So these are the people of the masjid, and these are the people who are responsible for them and placed in authority over them, not the disbelievers and the people of innovation; rather, [the masjid] are under the authority of the people of Iman, the people of Tawheed, the people of Aqeedah (sound creed).
Similarly, the masjid must be safeguarded from that which does not befit them; from the greatest [of these affairs], innovations, newly invented matters and shirk with Allah; so it is obligatory to banish the people of innovation, the people of superstitions and polytheists from the masjid. It is not permissible to allow them to establish themselves or their innovations, superstitions or shirk in the masjid.
Allah said, “It is not for the polytheists to maintain the houses of Allah.” [al-Tawbah 9:17]
Rather, it is obligatory to prevent them from them. The masājid must remain open for the remembrance of Allah Alone and His worship alone.
Allah said, “And the masjid are for Allah [Alone], so do not call on anyone other than Him. [al-Jinn 72:18]
This is how the masjid are maintained, with Tawheed and Taʿah (obedience); worship and remembrance of Allah.
Similarly, the masjid are safeguarded from that which does not befit them from filth and impurities; and protected from ignoramuses and children who do wrong in them; protected from spitting saliva and phlegm in them. This is from what Allah has prohibited.”

Advising Innovators Before Removing Them From The Masjids Of Sunnah Is Best
Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen said, “It is not good to expel them (innovators) from the mosque, rather some of them may be from among the common folk who do not know anything and have been misled by their scholars. If you are clever and call them in ways that are better, you may be able to influence them…
What I think you must do is advise them first [before removing them from the masjid], especially the ordinary people.
Advising does not mean attacking their madhhab and false religion.
No, advising means explaining the truth to them and teaching them the Sunnah.
Then after that, if you have explained the Sunnah to them [with evidences and gentle speech and good manners], I am absolutely certain that if they have real faith, they will come back to the Sunnah and give up their falsehood.
If that happens, then that is better [than having to remove them from the masjids of truth and sunnah]…” Ref: Liqaa’aat al-Baab il-Maftooh (no. 80, question no. 4).
